2.4 million Guineas Colt wins on debut, slashed in Derby betting

The spotlight was firmly fixed on the Ballydoyle debutant Diego Velazquez during the inaugural two-year-old race. A striking figure, this 2.4 million guineas offspring of Frankel, guided by the skilled hands of Ryan Moore, lived up to the sky-high expectations by clinching an emphatic triumph in a highly competitive maiden contest.

Following this compelling display, Paddy Power promptly adjusted the odds to 12-1 (previously 16) for next year's 2,000 Guineas, and 10-1 (previously 14) for the Derby, underscoring the level of impact created by his victory.

Throughout the race, Diego Velazquez showcased his prowess by maintaining a prominent position. While a momentary nudge was necessary approaching the two-furlong marker, he seamlessly shifted gears within the last furlong, extending his lead to a substantial four and a half lengths over the debutant competitor, Guildenstern.

Adorned with a flashy appearance, characterized by a predominantly white face and four sizeable white socks, Diego Velazquez's journey to this debut was punctuated by a delay. Originally slated to debut in early June, an allergy forced a withdrawal. Aidan O'Brien explained, "He encountered a minor setback, and we had to halt his progress temporarily. As a result, he was primed for today's race. Ryan noted his inexperience - he's still discovering his role, yet his potential is monumental."

Ryan Moore, having guided the colt to victory, revealed, "It wasn't until the final 50 to 100 yards that he truly comprehended the race. His inexperience was evident, but there's a lot to build upon." Aidan O'Brien concurred, expressing his intentions to further hone the colt's skills before committing to a major event. "While we were confident about his capabilities, another run seems advisable before aiming for a significant challenge. He exhibited only half of his potential during training sessions, yet today, he barely needed any guidance."

O'Brien drew a parallel to a similar occurrence with Paddington at Ascot the previous year, emphasizing the familiar learning curve for first-time competitors. With a hopeful outlook, O'Brien remarked, "Should an appropriate winners race surface for Diego Velazquez, we will seize the opportunity. This experience will undoubtedly contribute to his growth and development."
