Only 9 in Queens Plate

Just nine runners have been entered to run in the R1-million L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate over 1600m at Kenilworth in Cape Town on Saturday 9 January.

The field for this prestigious Grade 1 race is headed up by Vodacom Durban July winner Belgarion, who recently continued to showcase his talent with a fluent victory in the Grade 2 Green Point Stakes over this course and distance.
The son of Dynasty has now won eight of his 10 races and is unbeaten in six starts since his gelding in 2019.
Rainbow Bridge had an interrupted preparation for the Green Point Stakes but still got within 0.40 lengths of Belgarion, with Cirillo just a short head back in third.
Both have been entered into the Queen’s Plate along with Grade 1 Champions Cup winner Golden Ducat and Do It Again, winner of this race in 2018.
Summer Pudding, unbeaten in eight starts, is among the 13 entries for the Grade 1 Cartier Paddock Stakes for fillies and mares over 1800m.
This will be her first run since winning the Grade 1 WSB Gauteng Summer Cup in November and her first in Cape Town.
Also among the entries is last year’s winner, Queen Supreme from the Mike de Kock yard, and Clouds Unfold.
Supplementary entries close at 11am on Thursday 31 December with declarations on Monday 4 January.
