Kaknis Gets Massive Fine

TRAINER MR EMMANUEL KAKNIS

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry which was finalised on 16 March 2021, Trainer Mr Emmanuel Kaknis was charged with a contravention of Rule 73.2.4. The particulars being that he was the trainer of the horse BIG JAY’S which broke down during Race 5, and was subsequently euthanised, at Fairview Racecourse on 5 August 2019. Blood specimens which were taken from the horse disclosed upon analysis, the presence of Butorphanol and Flunixin, which are prohibited substances in terms of the Rules.

Mr Kaknis pleaded not guilty to the charge, however, after considering all the evidence presented on behalf of the NHA and Mr Kaknis, the Inquiry Board found him guilty as charged.

After considering all the evidence in this matter, the Inquiry Board imposed a fine of R150 000, of which R50 000 was wholly suspended for a period of 12 (twelve) months on condition that Mr Kaknis is not found guilty of a contravention of Rule 73 during this period.

In terms of Rule 82.3.3 there is no right of appeal against the finding and penalty of the Inquiry Board.
