Racing has been left devastated following the tragic passing of popular jockey Dean Holland.

Holland, 34, died following a race fall at Donald on Monday afternoon.

The incident happened in race 1 at Donald where the horse came down just entering the home straight and fell apparently rolling over the jockey. He was unable to regain consciousness after a prolonged battle to save his life. 

Tributes have flowed for the much-loved member of Victoria's jockey ranks, with many describing him as a 'brother'.

"Deano was a talented and successful jockey but more than that he was a success as a husband, a father, a brother, a son and a friend Because genuinely he was one of the good guys! My deepest condolences to his family with this incredibly tragedy," jockey Daniel Ganderton tweeted.

"Love you brother," jockey Liam Riordan tweeted, with a photo of Holland punching the air in celebration after a win.

Champion hoop Craig Williams said: "He was a respected jockey and a loving father. May he rest in peace."

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne said: "Thoughts and prayers with Dean's family and children. Absolutely devastating."

Champion trainer Peter Moody tweeted: "Vale Dean Holland Thoughts and prayers to Lucy and his beautiful young family Way to soon RIP young man."

Lizzie Annells said in a tribute: "Our racing family is so devastated by this afternoon's events. The world loses a beautiful man. My thoughts also go to Alana. I cannot imagine what she's going through right now and I pray she's being supported just as much."
