It was 2 and a half months since that impressive
Cape Derby win at Kenilworth and Green With Envy found himself in the cauldron of Greyville Racecourse in a key prep for the Durban July against the reigning champion 2 year old. It ended up being a win full of merit as Dean Kannemeyer and team got the new July favourite home under a classic come from behind ride under Craig Zackey.
Green With Envy was trailing the front runner Snow Pilot by more than ten lengths for a considerable portion of race and had the off the pace specialist, Sandringham Summit in front of him, in a better position. So he was up against it in the run in.
Despite Snow Pilot setting the pace and making a dramatic move towards the inside rail halfway down the home stretch, jockey Gavin Lerena appeared to time his maneuver perfectly aboard the David Nieuwenhuizen trained Sandringham Summit (backed into to 7-10 favourite).
However, Craig Zackey had different plans, securing a magnificent Guineas double as Green With Envy (4-1) surged ahead unexpectedly and getting up in the dying stride, clinching victory by a mere 0.30 of a length.
Snow Pilot, won what many called a weak edition of the Cape Guineas led the pack but was ultimately overtaken, finishing third, just 0.6 of a length behind.
This triumph marked a significant achievement for Gimmethegreenlight, the champion sire from Varsfontein, as his offspring claimed the top two positions.
Bred and owned by Khaya Stables, Green With Envy boasts an impressive record of 5 wins and 3 places out of 9 starts.
Despite the challenging front running conditions, Green With Envy's victory in the R500k Gr2 Kzn Guineas was eye catching especially when one considers that he ran further than Sandringham Summit by some distance in terms of path gun to tape.
Trainer Dean Kannemeyer and owner Lady Christine Laidlaw, who previously tasted success in the Hollywoodbets Greyville contest in 2010 with Noordhoek Flyer, aim to go the same route as that champion by taking in the Daily News challenge. He didn't however compete in the July that year. Green With Envy is a has a different profile though and is looking for the ground.
