Dean Kannemeyer's 2024 Hollywoodbets Durban July aspirations are on track following Green With Envy's win in the R2 million Gr1 Daily News 2000, under jockey Craig Zackey. Despite a dramatic race, Green With Envy emerged victorious, boosting confidence for a repeat of Kannemeyer's 2015 Power King triumph.
Kannemeyer, who previously won the Daily News with Dynasty 21 years ago, had concerns about the race pace in a small field. These worries materialized when William Iron Arm set a fast early pace before falling back, causing disruptions. The Grey King's slipped saddle led to further chaos, with Green With Envy initially trailing.
In the final stretch, Zackey skillfully maneuvered Green With Envy, who hung inwards but avoided contact with other horses. Green With Envy narrowly defeated Flag Man, with Barbaresco finishing third after overcoming early interference.
The most impressive take out of the event was the run of Flag Man who Gavin Van Zyl purchased for his connections after a maiden win. The astute buy has proved incredible for the new connections and the Gareth Van Zyl stable of which father Gavin is patriarch of.
The race, completed in 123.69 seconds on good to soft ground, prompted a review by the stewards, but no further action was taken. Zackey, who rode three winners that day, expressed relief and pride in Green With Envy's performance. The race review was alot to do with nothing as there was no contact between horses, even though both drifted towards the inside of the track under pressure.
Bred by Khaya Stables and sired by Gimmethegreenlight out of Miss Coco, Green With Envy has now won 6 of his 10 starts, with earnings of R2,968,901. His next race is set for July 6 at the same venue, promising more excitement ahead.
Gavin Van Zyl told SAHorseracing.COM in an exclusive post race interview that cna be found on our Facebook page that he will meet the Daily News in the July for round 2.
