World-renowned trainer Danny Shum is delighted with how Romantic Warrior, the world’s highest-earning racehorse, is settling into his new environment at the Dubai Racing Club. The six-year-old gelding, a nine-time Group 1 winner, is embarking on an ambitious three-race campaign across the Middle East, showcasing his talent on the global stage.

“He’s good,” Shum shared enthusiastically. “Our team has sent videos of him swimming and training alongside Romantic Charm (his companion horse). The facilities are excellent, with a massive training track and top-notch stables. They’ve taken great care of us, even providing a police escort.”

Romantic Warrior’s Middle Eastern journey is expected to begin with the Group 1 Jebel Hatta (1800m) at Meydan on January 24. This will set up a thrilling clash with Godolphin’s Measured Time, who recently broke the 1800m track record at Meydan under the guidance of trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick.

“I’ll fly to Dubai on January 19 after the Sha Tin races to prepare for January 24,” Shum added. “James McDonald will join me. Romantic Warrior will gallop on the Meydan turf on January 21 before running on the 24th. Measured Time is very strong, and breaking the track record speaks volumes about his quality.”

Measured Time’s 1:45.11 run in the Al Rashidiya on December 20 has established him as a formidable opponent. However, Romantic Warrior’s credentials are equally impressive. The Hong Kong International Sale graduate boasts 17 wins from 22 starts, including high-profile victories in the 2023 Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate and 2024 Group 1 Yasuda Kinen.

Following the Jebel Hatta, Romantic Warrior will target the Group 1 Saudi Cup (1800m, dirt) in Riyadh on February 22. The campaign will culminate in either the Group 1 Dubai World Cup (2000m, dirt) or the Group 1 Dubai Turf (1800m) on April 5 at Meydan.

Shum is keeping a close eye on his superstar. “Every night, my team sends me photos and updates from the stables. It’s important to monitor him closely as he adjusts to the new environment,” he said.

Romantic Warrior’s career earnings stand at an astonishing HK$177.32 million (approximately US$22.82 million). His most recent victory in the Group 1 LONGINES Hong Kong Cup secured an unprecedented third triumph in the prestigious event.
