Striker: 5600 Winners and Counting!

At 58 years old, Piere "Striker" Strydom remains a titan in the world of horse racing. Despite decades of grueling competition, this world-class jockey continues to ride at an elite level, proving age is no barrier to greatness.

Strydom’s reputation precedes him—not just as a masterful jockey but also as a figure of respect in the jockey room. Faithful, dependable, and always ready to deliver, he’s as much a legend off the track as he is on it.

While Strydom has flirted with retirement on multiple occasions, the allure of top rides keeps him firmly in the saddle. One such moment came when See It Again reignited his passion. Originally contemplating stepping back, Striker took the reins in the Cape Derby and stunned the racing world, defeating the highly regarded Charles Dickens to secure trainer Michael Roberts his maiden Grade 1 victory.

The list of top horses he has partnered with is a testament to his enduring skill. From Dyce and Fatal Flaw to Thunderstruck and Zilzaal, Strydom’s recent résumé is packed with highlights. His latest rising star, however, is Quid Pro Quo, the Team Valor-owned colt who obliterated his rivals in the Dingaans on Summer Cup day. Strydom called Quid Pro Quo “the best filly I’ve ever ridden,” a monumental statement given his career's breadth.

Milestone Achievement

On Tuesday at the Vaal, Strydom celebrated yet another milestone when Beynac carried him to his 5600th career victory. It’s a remarkable achievement, yet there’s no sign of him slowing down.

This Saturday, Strydom is booked for marquee rides on Dyce in the Cape Flying Championship and See It Again in the Cape Met, solidifying his status as a go-to jockey for high-stakes events. Retained by owners Arun Chadha and Wayne Rippon, he also partners with Fatal Flaw when weight permits. Though restricted to rides at or under 58kg, Strydom continues to prove that his talent is as sharp as ever.

A Legend Who Refuses to Fade

Whether riding champions or nurturing the next generation of stars, Strydom’s impact on South African racing remains unparalleled. With 5600 winners and counting, this living legend shows no signs of hanging up his silks just yet. For Striker, the love of the sport—and the thrill of crossing the finish line—still burns brightly.
