Storm Boy, the brilliant son of U.S. Triple Crown winner Justify, has been officially retired from racing and will stand at Coolmore Australia for the 2025 season, it was announced on Monday.
Labelled “relentless, unstoppable and oh-so brilliant” by The Thoroughbred Report after his dominant victory in the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic, Storm Boy retires with five wins from seven starts and an aura of unfinished business.
A product of Coolmore’s own draft, the colt was born and raised on their Australian property before being purchased for $460,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He would go on to dominate his juvenile season, capturing the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes, the Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic, and the Group 2 Skyline Stakes in breathtaking fashion.
“He annihilated them, it was just so dominant,” said Hall of Fame trainer Gai Waterhouse of his Magic Millions win, while Racenet described it as “one of the most dominant...ever seen.”
Storm Boy entered the 2024 Golden Slipper as the heavy favourite, but fate was unkind. A poor start and an unfavourable track position left him with too much ground to make up, yet he still managed a fast-closing third—losing little lustre in defeat.
He returned at three with a commanding victory in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes, defeating a high-quality field by three lengths at Rosehill, reaffirming his elite class.
Coolmore Australia principal Tom Magnier expressed his excitement at bringing the colt home. “His early performances on the track really had to be seen to be believed. He was jaw-dropping. Much like his sire Justify, he broke his opponents’ hearts.”
The original plan had been to campaign Storm Boy in Europe, culminating in a run at Royal Ascot in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. However, lameness detected after his return to Ballydoyle last weekend prompted connections to end his racing career and shift focus to the breeding shed.
“This has come full circle,” said Coolmore’s Colm Santry. “He was foaled here, sold through our draft, and now returns as a stallion. He’s by the best young sire in the world and out of a Fastnet Rock mare—Australia’s best broodmare sire.”
Coolmore’s Tom Moore added: “It’s imperative we stand the best sons of Justify globally. Storm Boy now joins the likes of City Of Troy, who’s already fully booked. We couldn’t be more excited.”
Storm Boy will stand for a service fee of AU$16,500 (incl. GST).
