McDonald Suspension Alters Queensland Oaks Plans After Hong Kong Group 1 Success

James McDonald’s relentless international campaign added another Group 1 victory to his season tally in Hong Kong on Sunday, but the meeting ended with a suspension that will force the leading rider out of next month’s Queensland Oaks program in Brisbane.

McDonald partnered Romantic Warrior to victory in the Champions & Chater Cup (2400m), registering his 20th Group 1 success of the season and the 13th elite-level win of the gelding’s career. The result again underlined the durability and consistency of the Danny Shum-trained star, who was made to fight hard late after sustaining significant interference in the straight.

The incident that led to McDonald’s suspension occurred near the 300-metre mark when Deep Monster was tightened and subsequently checked. The Hong Kong Jockey Club stewards later charged McDonald with careless riding under Rule 100(1).

In their official report, stewards stated that McDonald “directed his mount in when not clear of Deep Monster, resulting in Deep Monster being taken from its rightful running.” The report further noted that the interference escalated near the 200 metres when Deep Monster shifted outward and made heavy contact with Romantic Warrior.

The penalty carries significant implications for the Brisbane winter carnival. McDonald remains free to ride this weekend and is expected to partner Monopolistic in the Queensland Derby and Fangirl in the Kingsford-Smith Cup. However, the suspension period rules him out of the following Saturday’s Queensland Oaks meeting.

That absence leaves the Chris Waller stable without its first-choice rider on leading Oaks prospects Panova and Chispa, with McDonald having been in a position to choose between the pair.

Stewards suspended McDonald from Wednesday, June 3 through Thursday, June 11, with permission to resume riding immediately after the expiry of the ban. He was also fined HK$120,000, approximately A$21,400.

Importantly, the stewards classified the incident as grade three carelessness with grade two consequences, an assessment that shaped both the suspension term and financial penalty.

While the suspension temporarily interrupts McDonald’s momentum, his international season continues to reflect remarkable consistency across multiple jurisdictions, with Brisbane now forced into a reshuffle at a critical stage of the winter carnival.
