One Stripe part of Star-Studded $1 Million Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1) Invitation List

South African-bred standout One Stripe sits as one of the numerous high-class group of 19 horses invited to contest the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1) on Jan. 24 at Gulfstream Park, one of the marquee events on an exceptional World Cup Day program.

Now with Graham Motion, the 5-year-old colt earned his first North American victory in style on Dec. 26 at Gulfstream, powering clear to score by 5 ¼ lengths in an optional claiming allowance. While still early in his U.S. career, One Stripe brings elite international credentials, having won six of nine starts in South Africa, including the Cape Guineas (G1) and the King’s Plate (G1), the Breeders' Cup 'Win and You're In' race that got him to the US. He has yet to race beyond one mile, adding an extra layer of intrigue as he stretches out to 1 1/8 miles against proven graded performers.

The Pegasus Turf for 4-year-olds and up forms part of a blockbuster World Cup Day card featuring 10 stakes races, seven graded, with total purses of $5.55 million. The program is headlined by the $3 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) and also includes the $500,000 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf (G2).

Seven millionaires feature among the invitees, led by established graded stars Cabo Spirit, Major Dude, Program Trading and Wolfie’s Dynaghost, underscoring the depth and quality of the prospective field.

Hall of Fame trainers Chad Brown, Mike Maker and Todd Pletcher—who have combined to win six of the seven runnings of the Pegasus Turf—are all represented. Each trainer has captured the race twice, with Brown’s Spirit of St Louis winning the most recent edition.

The invited horses, in alphabetical order, are:

Almendares: The British-bred 6-year-old has placed in six graded stakes, won the Wickerr Stakes at Del Mar and was beaten less than a length when fifth in the Seabiscuit Handicap (G2).

Anegada: Trained by Mike Maker, the 4-year-old Midshipman gelding has won two of his last three starts, both at 1 1/8 miles, including the Hawthorne Derby.

Astronomer: Consistent graded performer seeking his first top-level victory, with multiple runner-up finishes in Grade 2 and Grade 3 company.

Balnikhov: A seasoned 7-year-old with graded wins across multiple seasons and nearly $1.2 million in earnings.

Beach Gold: Mint Millions Preview winner who most recently finished third in the Fort Lauderdale (G3).

Cabo Spirit: California-based veteran with nearly $1.4 million in earnings and multiple graded victories.

Call Sign Seven: Lightly raced 5-year-old trained by Michael McCarthy, winner of the Seabiscuit (G2) at Del Mar.

Chasing the Crown: Mike Maker trainee who finished third at 64-1 in last year’s Pegasus Turf and has earned more than $1 million.

Cugino: Four-time stakes winner for Shug McGaughey, including the Red Bank (G2), with solid Gulfstream form.

El Potente: Florida-bred graded winner who has raced exclusively in California.

Layabout: Gulfstream specialist coming off a determined victory in the Tropical Park Derby.

Major Dude: Ultra-consistent Todd Pletcher runner with graded wins on the Gulfstream turf and more than $1.4 million in earnings.

Namaron: German Group 3 winner adapting steadily to North American racing.

Ohana Honor: Knickerbocker Stakes winner who has placed in both Grade 1 and Grade 2 company.

One Stripe: South African Group 1 winner now stepping onto the world stage in elite U.S. turf company.

Program Trading: Chad Brown-trained multiple Grade 1 winner, including the Saratoga Derby and Turf Classic.

Test Score: Another Graham Motion trainee with three graded wins during a standout sophomore campaign.
