Deterministic Breaks Course Record in Manhattan Repeat to Cement Turf Supremacy

Deterministic underlined his status as the premier turf force in North America with a commanding repeat victory in the Grade 1 Resorts World Casino Manhattan at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, not only defeating a quality nine-horse field but doing so in a course record 1:50.50 over 1 3/16 miles on the Mellon turf course — erasing the previous benchmark of 1:51.40 set by Say the World in August 2020.

The 5-year-old son of Liam's Map, now owned by St. Elias Stable, Ken Langone, Steven Duncker and Vicarage Stable, has developed into a model of consistency at the highest level. His Manhattan win was his ninth from 15 starts and extended a remarkable run of five consecutive graded stakes victories. He has not been beaten in stakes company since a second-place effort on an off-turf surface in April 2025 — a caveat that has become increasingly irrelevant with each performance on grass.

Race Dynamics

Jockey Kendrick Carmouche, aboard Deterministic for each of his last five wins including the 2025 Manhattan, produced a patient but well-positioned ride. The dual Grade 1-winning New York-bred Rhetorical, the reigning NYTB Horse of the Year, set fractions of 22.99 (quarter), 47.01 (half), 1:09.83 (three-quarters) and 1:32.92 (mile) over firm going. Deterministic tracked in second throughout and, when asked in the stretch, produced a finish that had more than enough to account for Rhetorical. He crossed the wire a half-length clear, with Test Score — under Manny Franco — surging into second a half-length ahead of stablemate One Stripe in third. Rhetorical faded to fourth.

Carmouche was unambiguous in his assessment after the race, noting that the horse had been marginally under-done at his prior start and had improved measurably for this assignment. The jockey's remarks that Deterministic is "all about business" once on course, despite being relaxed beforehand, reflect a temperament that has clearly contributed to his durability and consistency at the top level.

Trainer's View and What Comes Next

Trainer Miguel Clement, who has conditioned Deterministic through his entire rise to divisional prominence, left little ambiguity about where he believes his charge stands. Clement stated he considers Deterministic the best turf horse in the country and expressed the view that the horse was deserving of Eclipse Award recognition in 2025. He also signalled that the connections may look at tightening the horse's campaign distances going forward, either keeping him closer to a mile or dropping him back to that trip, with an eye toward enhancing his stallion appeal.

The Grade 1 Fourstardave on August 8 at Saratoga — a Win and You're In for the Breeders' Cup Mile — was identified as the most likely next target, with Clement describing it as "the logical choice" given the horse's affinity for the Spa. Deterministic won the Fourstardave as part of his 2025 campaign and is already a winner of the Fort Marcy at both Grade 2 and Grade 3 level.

Supporting Cast

Trainer Graham Motion had reason for mixed emotions, with both Test Score and One Stripe running creditably without being able to close the gap on the winner. Test Score, who won the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational in January before an eighth-place run in the Grade 1 Turf Classic at Churchill Downs, bounced back with a solid second. One Stripe, the 5-year-old formerly based in South Africa with a pair of Group 1 wins at Kenilworth on his record, continued to acquit himself well in North American company having already finished second in the Pegasus World Cup Turf and the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland. Motion acknowledged the difficulty of the task given the pace scenario and the nature of the course, noting that Gavin Lerena, aboard One Stripe, rode a good race but simply could not recover the ground required.

At odds of 9-2, Deterministic returned $11.84 on a $2 win wager and lifted his career earnings to $2.63 million. With a Fourstardave defence on the horizon and the Breeders' Cup Mile as a potential end-of-season target, the question is no longer whether he belongs at the top of the division — it is how far he can extend a sequence that is already historic by any measure.
