Japanese Sire Fuji Kiseki Dies at 23

Pensioned stallion Fuji Kiseki, sire of a number of good runners in Japan and elsewhere, including four champions, has died at the age of 23 at Shadai Farm.

From the first crop of Sunday Silence and bred by Shadai Farm, Fuji Kiseki died from a cervical spine injury, according to a spokesman for Japan Racing Association.

Top performers for Fuji Kiseki are Kinshasa no Kiseki, Japan's champion sprinter and champion miler of 2010; Isla Bonita, Japan's champion 3-year-old colt of 2014; Koiuta, Japan's champion older mare of 2007; and Sun Classique, South Africa's champion 3-year-old filly of 2007. Other standouts include Kane Hekili, two-time winner of the Japan Cup Dirt (Jpn-I), as well as Straight Girl, Sadamu Patek, and Fine Grain among other winners at the highest level.

Fuji Kiseki was among Japan's leading sires in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2007. His dam is the winning Le Fabuleux mare Millracer, who was bought by Shadai Farm for $190,000 at the 1989 Keeneland November sale and sent to Japan.

Japan's champion 2-year-old colt of 1994 and unbeaten in four lifetime starts for owner Yomoji Saito prior to a career-ending tendon injury at 3, Fuji Kiseki stood at Shadai Farm from 1996 through 2010 and was pensioned in 2011. He shuttled to John Messara's Arrowfield Stud in Australia from 1998 to 2003.
According to Jockey Club statistics, Fuji Kiseki is the sire of 69 stakes winners from 16 crops racing and the earners of more than $340 million.
