Kotzen's Woodhill Racing Passes the Torch to Varsfontein Stud, moves to Milnerton

After more than two decades at the heart of South African racing, the Woodhill Racing team has confirmed it will hand over the reins to neighbouring Varsfontein Stud.

Founded in 2001 by Neil and Maureen Smith, Woodhill Racing began with a shared dream and a deep love for the land. On the advice of Carl de Vos of Varsfontein, the Smiths purchased the picturesque farm opposite the iconic nursery of champions, unaware that it would grow into one of the country’s most treasured racing estates.

Under the guidance of Glen Kotzen, and in partnership with the Smiths, Woodhill blossomed into a world-class private training establishment. Over 25 years, the farm produced countless Equus Champions and a remarkable roster of winners. Among its standout graduates was Big City Life, who claimed four Grade 1 victories, including the unforgettable 2009 Durban July.

For Glen and Kathi Kotzen, Woodhill was more than a training centre—it was home. Here, they raised their children and built roots deeply entwined with the land they cared for so passionately.

Now, with full hearts and confidence in the future, the Kotzens have decided to pass Woodhill to their neighbours at Varsfontein Stud. They believe the farm is in exceptional hands and will continue to thrive under its new guardians.

While their chapter at Woodhill ends, the Kotzens’ dedication to their horses remains unwavering. Working in partnership with Race Coast, they will continue training from Milnerton and Durban, making use of racing tracks across the country.

In closing, the family expressed their deepest gratitude to patrons and supporters, acknowledging their role in Woodhill’s extraordinary journey. “It has been an honour and a privilege,” they said, “to share this remarkable chapter with you all.”
