NAPOLEON SOLO AND FURTHER ADO SET FOR HASKELL SHOWDOWN

The Grade 1 Haskell Stakes takes centre stage at Monmouth Park on Saturday, with a competitive field of seven three-year-olds assembled for the $1 million contest over 1 1/8 miles.

At the heart of the race is an intriguing clash between Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo and Further Ado, the latter installed as the 2-1 morning-line favourite following a campaign that has already established him among the leading members of his generation.

Further Ado arrives at Monmouth with four victories from eight starts and earnings approaching $1.45 million. The son of Gun Runner produced one of his standout performances when capturing the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes before enduring a difficult Kentucky Derby, where he finished 11th after encountering trouble.

Trainer Brad Cox subsequently regrouped with the colt, and Further Ado returned to winning form in the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs. His ability to race prominently or settle behind the speed gives Irad Ortiz Jr. options from gate two, particularly in a race where early positioning could prove important.

Napoleon Solo brings arguably the strongest piece of Triple Crown form into the Haskell following his victory in the Preakness Stakes. The Chad Summers-trained son of Liam's Map has won three of his five career starts and will again be partnered by Paco Lopez.

Drawn in gate six, Napoleon Solo has been given time to acclimatise to Monmouth after arriving earlier in the week. His Preakness performance demonstrated that he belongs at the highest level, and another Grade 1 victory would further strengthen his position among America's leading three-year-olds.

DEPTH BEYOND THE MARKET LEADERS

The race, however, extends well beyond the two market leaders.

Iron Honor represents Chad Brown and arrives after finishing second to Napoleon Solo in the Preakness. With only four career starts behind him, the son of Nyquist remains relatively lightly raced and has already shown his quality by winning the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes. Flavien Prat takes the ride from gate five, and a rematch with his Preakness conqueror adds another dimension to the Haskell.

The Puma is another fascinating runner. His Kentucky Derby ambitions were halted when he was withdrawn before the race, leaving him to return from a break in one of the strongest three-year-old contests of the summer. His earlier form suggests he has the ability to make his presence felt if ready to produce his best first-up.

Few runners will attract more curiosity than Ocelli. Despite remaining a maiden after nine starts, he has accumulated more than $800,000 in earnings by repeatedly competing with some of the strongest horses of his generation. His record underlines the unusual nature of his career: he has yet to win a race, yet continues to perform competitively at the highest level.

Baby Vino provides the strongest element of local form. He earned his opportunity at the highest level with an emphatic victory in the Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth. Saturday represents a significant rise in class, but his familiarity with the track and the authority of his latest victory make him an interesting addition to the field.

Completing the line-up is Star Sweeper, the 30-1 outsider, who also brings previous Monmouth experience into the contest.

A RACE WITH BIGGER IMPLICATIONS

The Haskell presents an important opportunity for the three-year-old division to begin taking shape beyond the Triple Crown. Napoleon Solo has already secured one of America's Classics, while Further Ado has demonstrated his Grade 1 ability and Iron Honor came within striking distance of Preakness success.

Saturday could therefore provide considerably more than another Grade 1 winner.

With the Haskell carrying an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Classic, victory could establish a clear pathway towards one of the biggest prizes of the American racing season.

Further Ado may start favourite, but Napoleon Solo arrives with the Preakness on his résumé, Iron Honor is looking to reverse that form, and several others have legitimate questions to answer.

Over nine furlongs at Monmouth, those questions will finally be settled on the track.
