TRIBUTE TO IAN VELTMAN

TRIBUTE TO IAN VELTMAN

One of South Africa`s most charismatic and colourful racing personalities, Durban`s Ian Veltman, passed away in Durban earlier this week after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jovial and ever enthusiastic about racing and giving 100% support to the industry as an owner with shares in more than 30 horses and as a director and steward of the KwaZulu-Natal Racing Chapter, Ian was a loyal friend and supporter and was a part owner with Herman Brown of the Calloway Park training centre at Summerveld.

In spite of the debilitating effects of his illness, Ian continued to attend race meetings in the province, celebrating the successes of the top thoroughbreds from whatever stables they raced - merely acknowledging the magnificence of the animals he loved so dearly.

British born and graduating with a BA Honours Degree in Business Law from the City Guild University in London, Ian retired at an early age from his position as CEO of the PSD Group which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. He and his family decided to settle in South Africa but retained bases in the United Kingdom and Australia. In addition to his racing interests in South Africa, Ian also owned horses in France and Australia and had the honour of winning graded races in those countries as well. Ian was a much-loved member of South Africa`s racing community and his active participation lifted and enriched the lives of the many who were privileged to call him a friend. His passing leaves a major void in the ranks of racing personalities and Gold Circle, together with everyone in racing, offers their condolences to his family.
