One has to search long and hard to find a better bet than Second Empire in
South Africa. An unbeaten juvenile champion in Ireland, a Grade 1 winner in
Europe and a Timeform rating of 124.
This is Second Empire - a stallion that has graced our shores after a career
in Australia and previously in Ireland. His reputation in Australia was
heightened after his progeny won over the weekend.
On Saturday the 16th of July 2005, Empire Dancer won the $50 000 Belmont
Classic, a listed event. Another son of the great miler, Beckermet, won the
listed Hackwood Stakes, to give Second
Empire two big wins in Australia and UKon
one day.
Not to be outdone, the Northern Hemisphere crop also produced 3 placed runners in Italy to prove that the stallions
progeny can run just about anywhere in the world and this was all in one
weekend.
In South Africa, an imported juvenile daughter of Second Empire won for
Michael Roberts recently. Silver Empire is out of Vintage Silver by Marooned.
She was a A$32.500 yearling purchased at the Magic Millions Perth Sale. She has
some real talent and seems to be heading for the top. Roberts thinks highly of
her. We also eagerly awaiting the debut of
Tropical Empire (AUS) a son of Second Empire also in training with Michael
Roberts.
In Australia to date, Second Empire has 2 crops racing. He has had 37 winners
in that jurisdiction in two years. 28 of them have won on good to firm ground
making them ideal racehorses for South African conditions. 14 have won from
1000m to 1300m, 10 from 1300m to 1500m and 5 from 1500m to 2000m.
He retired as the second top rated European 2yo as well as the Champion 2yo
and Champion 3yo miler in Ireland. He stands at Oaklands Estate in the Western
Cape next to Medaaly (Ch am pion
freshman in France)and Alado.
