Bay City Roller dominates Coronation Cup as soft ground reshapes the narrative at Epsom

The 2026 Group One Coolmore Coronation Cup, run for a record £1 million in prize money, arrived at Epsom Downs framed as a high-level clash between proven top-tier stayers and a returning Derby winner, but it was the race conditions rather than reputation that ultimately dictated the outcome, with soft ground exposing the true specialist and producing a decisive performance from Bay City Roller.

Pre-race expectations overturned

The build-up centred on Calandagan (5-4), officially rated among the leading horses in the world, and Jan Brueghel (9-4), who had won this contest the previous year when beating Calandagan over the same mile-and-a-half trip. Adding further depth was last year’s Betfred Derby winner Lambourn, forming a six-strong field stacked with established Group One form. As the race unfolded, however, those leading names were put under sustained pressure by a rival better suited to conditions on the day. Bay City Roller (13-2) delivered a commanding display to win by 10 lengths, handing trainer George Scott his first domestic Group One victory. His jockey, Oisin Murphy, pointed directly to the conditions as a decisive factor, noting: “These are his ideal conditions.” The remark underlined a key theme of the race, with ground conditions playing a defining role in separating contenders.

Bay City Roller delivers clear-cut verdict

Bay City Roller, a four-year-old New Bay colt, travelled strongly through the race before pulling clear in the closing stages. He finished 10 lengths ahead of Jan Brueghel, with Lambourn a further 5½ lengths back in third, while Calandagan never reached contention and came home fourth. Murphy also highlighted the horse’s preparation and attitude between runs, adding that he had been “bucking” at home after a recent effort at The Curragh, describing him as “push-button” in running. The comment reinforced the impression of a horse arriving at peak condition at the right time.

George Scott lands first domestic Group One

For trainer George Scott, the victory marked a significant milestone in his training career, delivering a first domestic Group One success with a horse he described in emphatic terms. Scott said: “I’m grateful to everyone on this journey, right back to the beginning,” reflecting on the long-term progression behind the performance. His tone shifted from gratitude to admiration when assessing the horse himself, calling him “a very, very good horse on this ground.” That assessment was reinforced when he described Bay City Roller as “a consummate professional” and “a freak of a horse,” highlighting consistency and temperament as central traits behind the performance. Scott also indicated that the Coronation Cup had long been part of the plan, but only fully crystallised when conditions began to favour his runner. Once committed, he noted that preparation became increasingly targeted toward Epsom. Looking ahead, he raised the possibility of a higher-level autumn campaign, stating: “I think the Arc is his race,” signalling the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as a likely long-term objective, subject to how the horse is managed through the remainder of the season.

O’Brien acknowledges conditions as key variable

Aidan O’Brien, trainer of both Jan Brueghel and Lambourn, was measured in defeat and quick to emphasise the role of the ground. “I’m happy with that. They ran very well,” he said, before adding a key contextual line: “The winner loves soft ground.” He referenced prior form on similar surfaces, noting that Bay City Roller had previously won by 10 lengths in Germany under soft conditions, framing the result less as a surprise and more as a confirmation of known ground dependence. O’Brien also acknowledged the suitability of the trip for his runners but suggested that extreme conditions had tilted the race towards a specialist profile rather than a pure class test.

Clear separation at the finish

The final result produced a decisive spread between the principals, with Bay City Roller establishing a dominant margin over established Group One performers. The scale of the winning distance, combined with the ease of separation in the closing stages, marked this as one of the more clear-cut Coronation Cup outcomes in recent memory, particularly given the pre-race focus on closely matched elite contenders. With the major Epsom target now completed, attention naturally shifts toward whether Bay City Roller is aimed at an autumn campaign at the highest international level, where his profile as a soft-ground stayer could again become a defining asset. The Coronation Cup ultimately reinforced a familiar Epsom truth: at this level, reputation sets the stage, but conditions decide the outcome.
