The start of Mauritius’s 2025 horse racing season will be delayed by one week, the MTC Jockey Club (MTCJC) announced on Tuesday, July 16. The season, originally expected to kick off in late July, is now tentatively set to begin on August 2, 2025, pending final approval from the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA).
The decision comes after a formal request from the trainers’ ranks, with further discussions involving the GRA. According to the MTCJC, the postponement was necessary to ensure a competitive start to the season while meeting all regulatory obligations. Key among these requirements is ensuring that various industry operators are properly licensed and fully integrated with the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) systems.
“This move allows all stakeholders—including trainers, operators, and regulatory bodies—to be in full readiness, both operationally and legally,” said Santosh K. Gujadhur, President of the MTCJC. “We want to guarantee a vibrant and fair start to the season.”
As part of the season build-up, mock races will be held on Saturday, July 26, designed to simulate race day operations and test the readiness of all systems. A small number of spectators will be invited to attend the event at Champ de Mars, and on-site merchants will be present to recreate the energy of a proper race day.
While the delay may cause slight disappointment among racing fans, the MTCJC assured the public that this is a necessary step to ensure the smooth and successful launch of the season.
“We thank our racing community and fans for their continued support and understanding, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to Champ de Mars very soon,” Gujadhur said.
