COLEMAN WINS THE APPRENTICE CHALLENGE

Young Luke Coleman showed his more senior apprentices a clean pair of heels to win the South African Apprentice Challenge at Scottsville on Wednesday.

The 4 kg claiming apprentice won on the Dennis Drier trained mount, Naughty By Nature. He beat the Sean Veale ridden Rose of the Desert by 1 length. Kerri Meyer, a name that we haven`t seen too often, was a good 3rd on Black Emblem, a 33/1 outsider.

The Academy`s head boy, Richard Fourie, was a disappointing 5th on the favourite, Champers. The other "big" boys of the group, Muzi Yeni, Ian Sturgeon and Gavin Lerena, were unplaced.

In the MR 86 HANDICAP (F & M), Bright Umbel surprised again to claim the 4th win of her career. The game mare, who has legs problems, was sold at the Michael Holmes Shongweni Sale a few years ago for just R14 000. Since she has changed hands to Robin Watkinson, she has blossomed to win three more races and numerous places. She was previously trained by Alistair Gordon. She holds the class record for 1000m, fillies and mares maiden at Clairwood, set on her debut.

She was ridden to victory by top class apprentice, Christopher Puller, son of Cape trainer Glen Puller and nephew of the great jockey, Garth Puller.
