South African racing endured a sad loss at the passing of Ian Veltman today
(18 Oct 2004). Ian was probably one of the most colourful characters the game
has seen in recent years and many fondly remember him as much for his flamboyant
dress sense as for his outstanding personality and contribution to racing.
Ian was larger than life. Nothing, it seemed, could bring him down, but
unfortunately he succumbed to a long battle with cancer. Till recently, one
would still see Veltman on the racecourses of Kwa-Zulu Natal strutting around,
in his fashionable gear, with his family and friends as jovial as ever.
Veltman was a steward of the KZN racing chapter and he was a former
director of Gold Circle. It is indeed a sad loss. A tribute to this racing icon
will soon follow.
