Ombudsman Joins Elite Company With Dominant Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Defence

Ombudsman cemented his place among Royal Ascot’s modern greats with a dominant defence of the Gr1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, becoming only the fourth horse to win the 2000-metre contest in consecutive years and doing so in a manner that left a high-class field struggling to keep pace.

Sent off the 11-10 favourite, the Godolphin runner was ridden with patience by William Buick as Mississippi River and Devil’s Advocate ensured a strong tempo. Positioned off the speed throughout, Ombudsman travelled comfortably before Buick angled him into the centre of the track approaching the straight.

For a brief moment, it appeared the race would develop into a battle between several elite performers. Minnie Hauk and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Daryz were both within striking distance entering the final two furlongs, but neither could match Ombudsman’s acceleration when the race began in earnest.

The response was decisive. Ombudsman surged clear to score by four lengths from Minnie Hauk, with Daryz a further one and three-quarter lengths away in third.

A Performance That Stood Out

Co-trainer John Gosden, who also prepared Muhtarram to successive victories in the race in 1994 and 1995, described the effort as one of the standout performances of the horse’s career.

Assessing how the race unfolded, Gosden noted that the pace developed exactly as anticipated before Ombudsman's class took over in the closing stages.

"Devil's Advocate, with a furlong to go, I thought they were going to have to go a bit, but Ombudsman has got a phenomenal turn of foot – great acceleration for a mile-and-a-quarter horse. He just showed that class. It is quite something to come away from a field like that."

That observation was particularly significant given the calibre of opposition. Minnie Hauk arrived with strong credentials, while Daryz was bidding to add another major international success to his record.

Gosden also suggested the Juddmonte International at York could become a major objective later in the season.

"We will watch him and see where we go. The Juddmonte International will be a major target, of course, as he likes York."

Reflecting on Ombudsman’s overall profile, Gosden indicated the horse has now earned a place among the leading performers in the yard.

"Ombudsman is right up there now with what he's done. He is a lovely horse and he'll make a good stallion. He's got all the right things; he's got a good mind as well as a fabulous body and great strength."

Buick Impressed By The Manner Of Victory

While expectations were high heading into the race, Buick admitted the manner of the victory exceeded even his own projections.

"Every step of the way he was perfect, so there was a great deal of expectation, of course. Conditions were here to suit him, but I don't think you can ever expect a performance quite like that."

The jockey felt the race was run strongly enough to provide a reliable guide to the form, making Ombudsman’s superiority all the more notable.

"We were all together; essentially there were only three or four lengths between myself and Minnie Hauk, so I think it was a truly run race and one where the form will hold up."

Buick was particularly struck by the ease with which the winner dismissed rivals he greatly respected.

"Today, he pleasantly surprised me a little with how well he did it and the feel he gave me. He was exceptional – it's very rare for a horse to do what he did."

He added that the horse has continued to improve with maturity.

"From the back end of last year to now, he's really progressed. He’s a special horse and can do things that very few horses can."

Connections Of Placed Horses Look Ahead

Minnie Hauk lost little in defeat and trainer Aidan O’Brien felt the race unfolded largely as expected for a filly he believes is better suited by longer distances.

"She kept travelling from the three to the two, while the winner had a little bit more speed than her over a mile and a quarter."

O’Brien indicated that a campaign towards the King George and potentially the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe remains under consideration.

"I'd say something like the King George, one more run and then the Arc. That would work very well. This was the perfect prep for the King George today."

Francis-Henri Graffard felt Daryz was never able to settle into a comfortable rhythm and believed that played a decisive role in the result.

"My horse was not covered; he never really relaxed and had a chance to take a breath. I don't think he relaxed through the race; he was out of his rhythm all the time."

The French trainer contrasted the run with the performance that saw Daryz excel at Longchamp.

"We didn't see the Daryz of Longchamp, when he was nice and relaxed and quickened really strongly. Today, he was not like that."

Prince Of Wales’s Stakes Result

1. Ombudsman (Godolphin) – John & Thady Gosden – William Buick
2. Minnie Hauk (Derrick Smith, Sue Magnier & Michael Tabor) – Aidan O’Brien – Ryan Moore
3. Daryz (Aga Khan Studs SCEA) – Francis-Henri Graffard – Mickael Barzalona

Royal Ascot regularly produces performances that shape the narrative of a season. On this evidence, Ombudsman has moved beyond being merely a leading contender and into the conversation as one of the standout middle-distance horses currently in training.
