Need You Tonight Chases Historic Carreras de las Estrellas Classic Repeat

Argentina's premier day of racing takes centre stage this weekend as San Isidro hosts the prestigious Carreras de las Estrellas meeting, with the G1 Carreras de las Estrellas Classic (2000m) providing the headline act. Saturday's programme also marks a milestone, with the meeting joining the Hong Kong Jockey Club's World Pool for the first time.

Defending champion Need You Tonight (pictured) returns looking to become the first horse in recent years to successfully defend the Classic after producing a dominant victory 12 months ago.

The four-year-old has raced sparingly since that triumph, making only four appearances. His 2025 campaign was interrupted after two starts, including a seventh-place finish in Brazil's Gran Premio Latinoamericano over 2000m. However, his current preparation has been far more encouraging.

After an eye-catching runner-up effort in April, Need You Tonight returned to winning form with an impressive performance in last month's G1 Gran Premio Republica Argentina over 2000 metres on dirt.

The only lingering question surrounds his effectiveness back on turf. Despite limited experience on the surface, there are positive signs. His Gran Premio Latinoamericano run can be overlooked, while his only other start on grass resulted in a Group 1 second.

Strong opposition awaits

The defending champion faces no shortage of quality rivals in the nine-horse field.

The Gladiator's Hat brings excellent recent form after finishing third in this year's Gran Premio Latinoamericano, staged in Peru, while Honest Boy drops back in distance following his third-place finish in the G1 Gran Premio 25 de Mayo over 2400 metres.

Former Classic winner Vundu, successful in this race in 2024, arrives in winning form after claiming the G2 Clasico Forli over 1800 metres, while reigning G1 Gran Premio Jockey Club winner Real Rim adds further depth to a high-class contest.

The remainder of the field includes Neat Colt, Don Machete, Hit Colchonero and Mister Coquette.

Mile features Champion Miler

The G1 Carreras de las Estrellas Mile also promises a fascinating contest with reigning Argentine Champion Miler Earth God attempting to return to winning form.

After collecting two Group 1 victories late last season, Earth God is still searching for his first success of 2026 following an unplaced effort in the G1 Gran Premio de las Americas on dirt.

That race produced several key contenders for Saturday's Mile. Winner Drive Joy and third-placed Que Tarde Gris again look major players, while Bronx and Folie Ninja renew their rivalry after sharing victory in this race in 2024.

Colifato Novo, Argentina's former Champion Two-Year-Old, also commands respect after putting together three consecutive Group race victories.

The field is completed by Nevado Catedral, Majority Wins, Kopke, Grand Canyon and Adorado Rim.

Charm heads quality Distaff line-up

The G1 Carreras de las Estrellas Distaff sees last season's champion three-year-old filly Charm attempt to add another elite-level victory to her record.

Charm captured the Carreras de las Estrellas Juvenile Fillies on this programme last year and can be forgiven for her fourth-place finish in the G1 Gran Premio Gilberto Lerena over 2200 metres.

Her chief opposition comes from the first three home in last month's G1 Gran Premio Copa Diamante—Indiana Candy, Samba Do Brazil and Dream Serena—while Pawnee Drive, Noche Alta and Neowise all seek to reverse previous form.

The remaining runners are Invocacion, Casa Pueblo, La Watson, Lancara and Elvitas.

Race Times (GMT)

The G1 Carreras de las Estrellas Mile (1600m), carded as S1-1, will be run at 9:50pm GMT on Saturday, 27 June. The G1 Carreras de las Estrellas Distaff (1800m), carded as S1-2, follows at 10:30pm GMT, while the feature G1 Carreras de las Estrellas Classic (2000m), carded as S1-3, is scheduled for 11:10pm GMT.

With three elite-level races showcasing many of Argentina's best performers, Saturday's Carreras de las Estrellas meeting promises to deliver one of South America's premier racing spectacles as it makes its World Pool debut.
