Comanche Brave produced a decisive performance to claim the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday, extending Billy Loughnane's outstanding season with a victory that rewarded both an astute riding decision and the confidence of trainer Donnacha O'Brien.
Loughnane, the 2000 Guineas-winning jockey, seized the opportunity to partner the Irish-trained four-year-old after a campaign that had already tested him at the highest level. Earlier this season, Comanche Brave took on Ka Ying Rising in Hong Kong before returning home to impress at the Curragh. He then held his own in strong company at Royal Ascot, setting the stage for another top-level assignment.
The race unfolded with Japanese challenger Satono Reve adopting positive tactics in an attempt to emulate Agnes World's memorable July Cup success 26 years ago. Mission Central, trained by Aidan O'Brien, was also prominent during the early stages as the pace developed.
Comanche Brave, sent off at 11-1, travelled comfortably throughout and was always moving with purpose as the field approached the closing stages. Loughnane gradually brought his mount into contention before asking for a decisive effort on the rising ground.
The response proved immediate. Comanche Brave found another gear when it mattered most, pulling clear to defeat the late-finishing Venetian Sun by one length. Satono Reve stayed on to secure third, a further neck behind the runner-up.
The victory added another notable success to Loughnane's season while confirming Comanche Brave's ability to compete with distinction against elite sprinting opposition after a campaign that has taken him across multiple international stages.
