Frankie Dettori is recovering in hospital after being involved in a serious road traffic accident near Newmarket on Wednesday evening, with the multiple champion jockey sustaining several broken ribs and a broken thumb.

The 55-year-old was travelling in his car when it was struck by another vehicle. According to his representatives, the impact hit the rear passenger side of the vehicle, causing it to spin before overturning. Emergency services responded to the incident and Dettori was taken to hospital, where he remains under observation while awaiting further scans to determine the full extent of his injuries.

Accident Under Investigation

Dettori's management confirmed the circumstances surrounding the collision and provided an update on his condition.

"H Talent Management can confirm that Frankie Dettori was involved in a road traffic accident in Newmarket on the evening of Wednesday, 1st July," the statement said.

It added that another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car he was driving, causing it to spin and flip. The statement further confirmed that Dettori suffered several broken ribs and a broken thumb, with his injuries continuing to be assessed while he remains in hospital for further scans and observation.

The confirmation is significant as it establishes both the mechanism of the crash and the injuries sustained, while indicating that a full medical assessment is still ongoing.

Police Response

Police also confirmed officers attended the scene following reports of a collision.

A Cambridgeshire Constabulary spokesman said: "We were called at about 7pm yesterday (1 July) to the A1304, London Road, near Six Mile Bottom, after reports of a collision."

Authorities confirmed that no arrests were made in connection with the incident.

Marks left by skidding vehicles were reportedly still visible at the crash site the following day, while local residents claimed Dettori's two-seater Smart Car came to rest on its roof after overturning.
