South African Connection As Thesecretadversary Lands First Group 1 In Prix Jean Prat

Thesecretadversary confirmed his rapid rise through the sprinting ranks with a decisive victory in the Group 1 Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Prix Jean Prat at Deauville on Sunday, giving Ireland a one-two finish in the first top-level contest of the French summer meeting. Trained by James Anthony Stack, the colt races for South African breeder Gaynor Rupert's UK-based Cayton Park Stud in partnership with Mrs John Magnier. Following his Jersey Stakes (Gr3) success at Royal Ascot, he secured the first Group 1 victory of his career, while True Love and France's Nighttime completed the placings.

Ridden by Christophe Soumillon, Thesecretadversary travelled prominently along the stands' rail before producing a sharp turn of foot in the closing stages. He had enough in reserve to repel the late challenge of Ryan Moore aboard True Love, scoring by half a length in 1:22.17, with a head separating the runner-up from Nighttime.

The victory provided Stack, who trains at Thomastown in County Tipperary, with his first European Group 1 success. It also marked consecutive victories in the race for Soumillon, who won last year's renewal aboard Woodshauna.

Trainer's Confidence Rewarded

Stack revealed that discussions with Soumillon before the race proved important after concerns over the anticipated pace.

"Christophe Soumillon gave him a superb ride," Stack said. "We were a little concerned about the pace of the race. He told me, 'I think we'll have to go on because nobody else seems willing to do it.' I replied, 'Go ahead.' Everything worked out perfectly."

The trainer pointed to previous runs where circumstances had prevented the colt from showing his full ability.

"He had pulled too hard in the English Guineas, and in the Irish equivalent he never got a clear run. We have always believed he was a good horse."

Stack also noted that the Jersey Stakes victory had reinforced the stable's belief that shorter distances suited the colt best.

"When he won the Jersey Stakes over seven furlongs at Ascot, Seamie Heffernan said he would be even better over six furlongs. Christophe Soumillon said exactly the same thing today."

Looking ahead, Stack confirmed the colt holds entries in the Group 1 City of York Stakes and the Sprint Cup at Haydock, although he said the final decision would be made after discussions with the ownership group, taking their long-term stallion ambitions into account.

Soumillon Sees More To Come

Soumillon believes the colt still has untapped potential, highlighting both his temperament and adaptability.

"Thesecretadversary is a superb horse. He's tough and very straightforward to ride," he said. "When I saw this straight course on a flat track, I thought he would be capable of running a very big race."

The Belgian-born jockey explained that the race unfolded exactly as he had hoped.

"Everything went perfectly throughout the race. I was never really under any pressure and, when I asked him to quicken, he responded extremely well."

He also felt the performance confirmed the colt's ideal distance profile, a significant observation given the options available later in the season.

"I think seven furlongs is really the limit of his stamina. Over six furlongs, however, I believe he would be just as effective."

Soumillon added that the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville was an obvious possibility but stressed the colt's recovery would determine the next target.

Placed Connections Reflect

Representing Coolmore, Hermine Bastide said there were no regrets following True Love's runner-up finish.

"Ryan Moore is very pleased with True Love. We really have nothing to reproach her for."

Christopher Head was equally satisfied with Nighttime's third-place effort against elite international opposition.

"It's always very difficult to take on the Irish, especially as this is really their sport," Head said. "But I was delighted with Nighttime's attitude. He was extremely professional, and I'm really pleased to see him performing again at this level."

Head revealed his jockey returned with an equally positive assessment after the colt's first start on a straight course.

"He told me, 'When you're racing among horses that have won the Guineas or the Poules d'Essai, what more could you ask for?' That sums up the merit of his performance."

Head said plans for the colt's next start would be discussed with the owners once he had recovered from the race.

Thesecretadversary's breakthrough at the highest level not only rewarded the confidence of his connections but also delivered another international Group 1 success for Gaynor Rupert's breeding and racing interests, with Cayton Park Stud continuing to build on the foundations established alongside Drakenstein Stud.
