Dubawi will miss the Breeders` Cup Mile at Belmont Park on October 29th and
has been retired to Stud following a training setback. He has sustained an
injury to a hind ligament which will prevent him from running in New York. Stud
details are to be announced shortly.
The best son of Dubai Millennium was the decisive winner of a Classic - the
Irish 2,000 Guineas earlier this year - among his three Group One successes.
Saeed bin Suroor, his trainer, paid tribute to Dubawi. He said today, Friday,
October 7, 2005: "He was a great racehorse by a great stallion. We are
going to miss him at Godolphin - he was the best three-year-old we had.
"He won a Group One as a two-year-old and two more this year including a
Classic. He was also third in the Vodafone Derby and second in the Queen
Elizabeth II Stakes.
"Dubawi showed his class before he raced - he always had plenty of speed
- which gave me the confidence that he would be a good horse.
"He is a very relaxed horse, very quiet. He concentrated and focused on
his work - he wanted to be the star and he was.
"I am sure he is going to take his place among the best stallions in the
world."
Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, added: "It was a joy to
have Dubawi within Godolphin. He was a great racehorse who performed at the
highest level as a two-year-old and throughout his Classic campaign.
"He was such an exciting colt and gave everything he had in his
races."
Frankie Dettori, who rode Dubawi on seven of the three-year-old`s eight
starts, reflected on a racing career cut short.
Godolphin`s number one rider declared: "Dubawi was a real champion as a
two-year-old and won a Classic for me this year - that performance in the Irish
2,000 Guineas was probably his best run.
"He gave me a fantastic ride in the Derby and proved how good he was by
winning the Prix Jacques le Marois and was unlucky not to win the Queen
Elizabeth II Stakes.
"He was a great horse to be around, very tough and very good. He had
excellent cruising speed and a tremendous turn of foot.
"Dubawi achieved a lot during his career but there is plenty more that
he could have done."
Kerrin McEvoy, Godolphin`s second retained rider who took over on Dubawi in
the Group One Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August when Frankie Dettori
was injured, said: "Dubawi supplied me with one of my biggest wins.
"He was one of the best horses I have ridden and it is a shame that his
career has been cut short - he was a pleasure to be around."
Dubawi`s eight-race career started at Goodwood on June 4 last year when he
won a six-furlong maiden in promising style and then went through 2004 unbeaten
despite stepping up in grade each time he ran.
He stepped up to seven furlongs for his next outing in the Group Three
Weatherbys Superlative Stakes at Newmarket`s July Course, defeating Henrik and
Wilko among others.
Henrik subsequently finished third to Motivator in the Group One Racing Post
Trophy at Doncaster, while Wilko scaled the heights in America by winning the
2004 Grade One Breeders` Cup Juvenile at Lone Star Park.
Dubawi`s only other start of 2004 came at the Curragh, Ireland, in the
September when he ran on strongly to beat Berenson by three lengths in the Group
One Dunnes Stores National Stakes over seven furlongs on yielding turf.
The colt wintered well in Dubai where he was the decisive winner of
Godolphin`s private trial over a mile on turf at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse on
April 11, quickening up well in the straight to go clear of five others.
Dubawi made his seasonal reappearance in the first British Classic, the
UltimatePoker.com 2,000 Guineas, at Newmarket on April 30, finishing fifth to
Footstepsinthesand, beaten nearly three lengths. He did not like the very fast
ground that day and hung left.
The three-year-old won the Boylesports Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh on
May 21 over a mile by two lengths from Oratorio, with Democratic Deficit another
six lengths away in third.
The winning margin does not reflect Dubawi`s superiority that day over
Oratorio - winner of two Group Ones since - as he went clear before being eased
down in the closing stages.
He then ran in the premier British Classic, the Vodafone Derby at Epsom, but
found the mile and a half too far when third.
A scintillating victory in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard Jacques Le
Marois at Deauville, France, followed on Sunday, August 14.
The hitherto unbeaten filly Divine Proportions could only finish fourth as
Dubawi smoothly beat Deauville specialist Whipper, victorious in three Group
Ones at the French course, by a length and a half, with three-quarters of a
length back to the third Valixir, successful in his previous three runs
including two Group Ones.
Dubawi`s last start was in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at
Newmarket on September 24 when he finished the half-length runner up to
Starcraft
Godolphin
