Feather Boa Steps Back Into the Stakes Spotlight at Gulfstream

South African Grade 2 winner Feather Boa returns to stakes company Saturday when she lines up in the $150,000 Suwannee River Stakes at Gulfstream Park, a one-mile test on turf that could shape her winter campaign.

This will be just the third U.S. start for the Todd Pletcher-trained mare since relocating from South Africa, and her first appearance in Florida. She has finished third in both American outings, the most recent coming in October 2025 at Aqueduct in the Listed Noble Damsel Stakes.

That New York race provides a clear form line, as Feather Boa once again faces Aussie Girl, the filly who finished narrowly ahead of her on that occasion. In the Noble Damsel, Aussie Girl edged past Tax Implications by a neck, with Feather Boa another three-quarters of a length back after racing as a 9-1 outsider.

Team Valor's Feather Boa was making her first start in nearly 13 months in that race, meaning Saturday’s assignment represents a meaningful step forward in terms of race fitness. She made up a stack of ground last time out from a 6 wide trip. Now a 6-year-old South African-bred, she is expected to be ridden patiently again, settling early and finishing late.

One notable change is in the saddle. Irad Ortiz Jr. takes over riding duties on Feather Boa, a significant booking as she looks to turn consistency into a breakthrough U.S. performance.

The Suwannee River also serves as a potential springboard to the Grade 2 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf Invitational, a $500,000 race over 1 1/16 miles scheduled for January 24 at Gulfstream Park. A strong showing from either Feather Boa or Aussie Girl would likely put that race firmly on the agenda.

Aussie Girl also sees a jockey switch, with Tyler Gaffalione riding her for the first time.

Feather Boa brings solid international credentials to the table. She was a Group 2 stakes winner in South Africa in 2023, scoring over 7¼ furlongs, and remains lightly raced in North America despite her age.

The Suwannee River Stakes is Race 9 on an 11-race card that includes five stakes in total. Earlier on the program are two $125,000 sprints: the Sugar Swirl Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs, and the Janus Stakes, a five-furlong turf dash.
