KZN Breeders Club Secures State Visit, First Wootton Bassett Stallion for South Africa

South Africa's stallion ranks will receive a significant international addition this breeding season with the arrival of State Visit (AUS), the first son of global sire sensation Wootton Bassett to stand at stud in the country. The acquisition represents another major step in the KZN Breeders Club's strategy of introducing internationally proven bloodlines while broadening the genetic options available to local breeders.

State Visit arrives with credentials that extend well beyond his sire. He is the first foal of Celebrity Queen, a Group 1-winning daughter of champion sire Redoute's Choice from a stakes-winning daughter of More Than Ready, placing him among one of the deepest modern Australian pedigrees to reach South Africa.

Wootton Bassett's Global Legacy

Few stallions have reshaped the international breeding landscape as rapidly as Wootton Bassett. Unbeaten in five starts as a juvenile, highlighted by victory in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, he entered stud in France with limited commercial support and a first crop numbering only 23 foals.

That modest beginning quickly transformed his reputation. His first crop produced multiple Group 1 winner Almanzor along with several other stakes performers, prompting Coolmore to purchase the stallion and relocate him to Ireland.

The move proved pivotal. Standing at a fee of €100,000, Wootton Bassett produced a remarkable first Irish crop that yielded 10 juvenile Group winners, surpassing the long-standing record of seven jointly held by Danehill and Galileo. He subsequently earned recognition as Europe's leading sire of two-year-olds.

His influence extended to Australia, where he became a leading juvenile sire from his first southern hemisphere crop. Demand for his offspring drove his Australian service fee to a record A$385,000 in 2025 before his untimely death, making his remaining sons increasingly valuable as future stallions. Servicing dual Hemispheres, Wootton Bassett died at 17. He last stood at €300,000 at Coolmore in Ireland.

Elite Family Behind the Colt

State Visit's female family offers depth to match the strength of his sire line.

His dam, Celebrity Queen, won seven of her 14 starts, including the Group 1 MRC Oakleigh Plate and Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes, while also finishing runner-up in both the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes and Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes.

Following her racing career, Celebrity Queen was sold as a broodmare prospect for A$2.5 million. Her production record is still in its early stages, with further progeny by Justify and Wootton Bassett already on the ground and another by Home Affairs to come.

The family extends further through a stakes-winning More Than Ready mare descending from a dual Group 1-winning daughter of Marscay, reinforcing the concentration of elite Australian bloodlines throughout the pedigree.

The sire influences alone underline the family's quality. Wootton Bassett established himself as Europe's champion two-year-old sire, Redoute's Choice became a multiple Australian champion sire and four-time champion broodmare sire, More Than Ready built a worldwide reputation that includes siring South African champion sire Gimmethegreenlight and producing more Breeders' Cup winners than any other stallion, while Marscay twice topped Australia's sire premiership and later became a four-time champion broodmare sire.

Proven Against Australia's Best Juveniles

State Visit demonstrated his ability at the highest level from the outset of his racing career.

He won on debut over 1250 metres before finishing third in a Group 3 after making his run from the rear of the field. He then stepped into Group 1 company over 1400 metres, again overcoming an unfavourable racing position to finish a narrow second.

That defeat proved particularly significant. State Visit was beaten only a short head by Vinrock in the G1 ATC Sires' Produce Stakes, with Vinrock subsequently retiring to Yulong Stud.

His stable's assessment reflected both the colt's ability and professionalism.

"At his first start he was very impressive running good sectionals but he was still very new," Gerard-Dubord said.

Providing further context after subsequent performances, Gerard-Dubord noted that State Visit repeatedly had to concede ground before producing strong finishes.

"Second start he had to go all the way back and make his run on the outside, which is not easy to do, and last start he was very good. Jason (Collett) said he actually didn't see the horse (winner Vinrock) on his inside and that's why he came back again in the end.

"He's got the best attitude, a beautiful action. He is a lovely colt so we will try to get that Group One win."

Two weeks later State Visit contested the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over 1600 metres on soft ground, conditions that did not suit him, yet he still finished fourth.

Within less than two months at the beginning of his career, he compiled a record of a maiden victory, third in a Group 3, second in a Group 1 and fourth in another Group 1 against what proved to be one of Australia's strongest juvenile generations.

An issue that developed later prevented him from fulfilling his racing potential and ultimately curtailed his career. He retired after only nine starts, with all but his maiden win coming in stakes company. His record included a win, a Group 1 second, Group 3 third, Group 1 fourth, Listed fourth and Group 2 fifth.

Building on Eden Roc's Success

The acquisition follows the encouraging reception given to the first crop of Eden Roc, the KZN Breeders Club's initial stallion purchase, at this year's sales.

The club confirmed that its objective was to source a stallion capable of introducing fresh international blood while offering wider appeal to breeders across KwaZulu-Natal and the broader South African industry.

State Visit is currently completing quarantine and is expected to arrive in KwaZulu-Natal ahead of the upcoming breeding season. His arrival provides South African breeders with direct access to one of the final opportunities to tap into the influential Wootton Bassett sire line through a Group 1-performed juvenile carrying one of Australia's strongest commercial female families.
