Chelmsford City Racecourse has moved a significant step closer to reopening after Arena Racing Company (ARC), Chelmsford City Racecourse and Moulsham Hall Estates Ltd reached an agreement that will allow racing to resume at the Essex venue. The development restores momentum for a racecourse that holds an important place on the British fixture list following a period of uncertainty.

ARC confirmed that terms had been agreed with the freeholders, with the company now working through the remaining regulatory process before fixtures can recommence.

Explaining the importance of the breakthrough, ARC Chief Executive Martin Cruddace said the agreement was the result of cooperation between the parties.

"Racing at Chelmsford City Racecourse is hugely important to the fixture list and we are therefore delighted to work with the freeholders to reach agreement that will allow racing to return to the venue.

"We are in discussion with BHA with regards the relevant licences required to resume racing as soon as possible."

His comments are significant because, while the commercial agreement has been secured, racing cannot resume until the necessary licences have been granted by the British Horseracing Authority.

The racecourse ceased operations after Great Leighs Estates, the previous tenants of the venue, entered administration.

Attention now turns to the licensing process, with ARC aiming to return Chelmsford City Racecourse to the racing calendar at the earliest opportunity.
