Rossa Ryan banned for 28 Days

Rossa Ryan will miss several major fixtures after being suspended for 28 days following a ride on Thunder Home at Sandown that the stewards determined cost the colt victory. The penalty followed an inquiry into the closing stages of the Martin Densham & Peter Deal Memorial British EBF Maiden Stakes, where Thunder Home was beaten a nose by Zero Error after Ryan briefly appeared to stop riding before the winning post.

Riding for trainer James Horton, Ryan adopted front-running tactics and established a decisive advantage entering the final two furlongs. While Jamie Spencer produced a late challenge aboard John and Thady Gosden's Zero Error, Thunder Home still appeared to have enough in reserve to hold the lead.

In the final strides, however, Ryan's riding appeared to lose urgency before he resumed driving his mount to the line. Following a photo finish, Zero Error was declared the winner by a nose.

Stewards' Inquiry

The stewards reviewed recordings of the race before interviewing Ryan, with their findings proving decisive.

The official report stated: "Rossa Ryan, the rider of Thunder Home, had appeared stop riding on the run to the line before recommencing his ride in the final strides to finish second, beaten by a nose.

"After being interviewed and shown recordings of the incident, Ryan was suspended for 28 days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing on a horse that would have finished first."

The wording of the finding is significant, as the stewards concluded Thunder Home would have won had the required effort been maintained through to the winning post.

Major Meetings Affected

Ryan's suspension will begin on August 6. The ban will rule him out of the Ebor Festival at York and the Prix Morny at Deauville, where he had been expected to renew his partnership with the unbeaten Orthodox, trained by Clive Cox.

The absence of one of Britain's leading jockeys from two high-profile meetings ensures the consequences of the Sandown inquiry will extend well beyond the race in question.
