Kalpana Delivers Career-Defining King George Victory Over Calandagan

Kalpana produced the standout performance of her career to capture the £2 million King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, defeating French challenger Calandagan by a decisive length and a half. The victory overturned last year's form between the pair and rewarded another trademark consistent display from the Andrew Balding-trained mare.

Sent off at 13-2, Kalpana arrived with an exceptional record of consistency, having finished in the first three in 15 of her previous 16 starts. Despite that reliability, many expected favourite Calandagan to confirm last season's superiority.

Instead, Colin Keane produced Kalpana with two furlongs remaining after she swept past early leader Lambourn, while Aidan O'Brien's Minnie Hauk began to weaken. From there, the Juddmonte-owned mare responded every time Keane asked for more, maintaining her advantage all the way to the line.

Graffard Reflects On Calandagan's Preparation

Trainer Francis-Henri Graffard believed the turnaround from Calandagan's previous start may have played a role in the defeat. The observation is significant given the horse had only 20 days between his hard-fought victory in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and his Ascot assignment.

"It is a very good run, I have nothing to blame the horse for," Graffard told ITV Racing. "Kalpana is a very good filly, Andrew's horses seem to be flying at the moment.

"He had less time between his last race compared to last year. He had a hard race today so I need to see how he comes back."

Graffard's comments acknowledged both the quality of the winner and the possibility that Calandagan's demanding recent campaign may have left him short of his peak.

Consistency Rewarded

Kalpana's victory reinforced the value of sustained consistency at the highest level. Faced with a proven rival and one of Europe's premier middle-distance contests, she delivered her strongest performance when it mattered most, giving Andrew Balding, Colin Keane and Juddmonte a deserved success in one of the season's flagship races.
