Apprentice Jockey dies in Accident

The Australian racing industry is in mourning following the tragic death of apprentice jockey Bronte Simpson, a young rider whose determination and talent had begun to shine through after years of perseverance.

Simpson, 24, died on Monday night in a single-vehicle accident on the Castlereagh Highway, approximately 80 kilometres outside Dubbo in New South Wales. NSW Police confirmed that emergency services were alerted after a member of the public called triple-0 upon spotting the vehicle. Despite efforts by passers-by to assist, Simpson was pronounced dead at the scene. A report is being prepared for the coroner.

The news has sent shockwaves through racing circles, with tributes pouring in from jockeys, trainers and administrators across the country. NSW Jockeys’ Association chief executive Tony Crisafi spoke for many when he described the loss as devastating.

“We’ve lost a member of our family in this tragic event,” Crisafi said. “We have been left devastated by the news, and on behalf of the association and our fellow jockeys, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Bronte’s family.”

Crisafi also highlighted the impact Simpson’s passing has had on her peers, particularly younger female riders.

“Bronte was very close with many of them, and it has hit them the hardest,” he said. “The association will wrap its arms around them and make sure the right support is in place.”

Originally from Ballarat in Victoria, Simpson relocated to New South Wales to further her riding career. Her path was far from straightforward. In 2023, her future in the saddle was placed in doubt after she suffered a broken jaw when kicked by a horse — a serious injury that required surgery and time away from racing.

Rather than stepping back, Simpson showed the resilience that defined her short career. She returned to race riding and enjoyed a breakthrough moment earlier this year when she won on debut, a milestone that marked her as a rider on the rise and rewarded her persistence.

Those who worked with her remember a jockey who was driven, grounded and deeply passionate about the sport. While her career was only just beginning, her loss has left a profound sense of sadness throughout the racing community.
