Frankel Colt Headlines Strong Opening Day at Magic Millions

A colt by global heavyweight sire Frankel set the early tone at the 2026 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, becoming the clear focal point of Day One when he sold for $2 million on Tuesday.

Offered as Lot 59 by Segenhoe Stud on behalf of Fairway Thoroughbreds, the colt sparked sustained competition before Coolmore’s Tom Magnier landed the final bid as auctioneer Grant Burns closed proceedings.

Magnier said the colt had stood out throughout inspections and credited Segenhoe’s consistency in producing elite stock. He noted Coolmore’s long familiarity with Frankel progeny through Northern Hemisphere racing and breeding, adding that the colt’s movement and overall balance made him a unanimous choice within the buying team.

Purchased in partnership with trainer Chris Waller, the colt will join Waller’s stable. He is a brother to stakes-placed filly Chateau Eze and is out of an unraced Lonhro mare, herself a daughter of multiple Group winner A Time For Julia.

The result exceeded expectations for Segenhoe Stud and Fairway Thoroughbreds, with Segenhoe’s Peter O’Brien acknowledging the risk involved in sending mares to be covered in Europe. He credited owner-breeder John Camilleri for backing his judgement on the mare’s untapped ability, a decision now rewarded at the top end of the market.

Late in the session, the second-highest price of the day was achieved when an Extreme Choice colt from Dame Giselle sold for $1.2 million to Chris Waller and Guy Mulcaster. Consigned by The Chase as a homebred for China Horse Club, the colt is the third foal of Dame Giselle, a four-time Group Two winner by I Am Invincible out of Ballet Society.

Mulcaster highlighted the depth and reliability of the family, noting the scarcity of Extreme Choice progeny as a key factor in the purchase.

A third seven-figure result followed with the sale of an I Am Invincible filly from champion racemare Avantage. Offered by Coolmore Stud, the filly made $1.05 million to Glentree Thoroughbreds and Badgers Bloodstock. The filly is Avantage’s third foal, the Fastnet Rock mare having won nine Group One races during her career.

Glentree Stud Manager Luke Simpson described the filly as a long-term prospect, with racing ambitions aligned to an eventual broodmare role.

In total, 145 yearlings were sold on Day One at an average of $284,724 and a clearance rate exceeding 78 percent, both figures improving on the corresponding session last year. The sale gross reached $41.28 million.

Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said the market showed genuine depth, with strong engagement from buyers and vendors prepared to meet realistic reserves. He described the Frankel colt as a seven-figure horse from an early age and said the $2 million result fairly reflected both his pedigree and physical presence.

Day Two of the 2026 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale begins at 10am (Qld time) on Wednesday.
