Champion mare Via Sistina has been retired from racing, with trainer Chris Waller confirming the decision in a statement released on social media.

The 12-time Group 1 winner will now begin her next chapter in the breeding barn after a career that culminated in back-to-back Cox Plate victories and a dominant performance in the Champions Stakes.

Via Sistina had been spelled following her spring campaign, but Waller and owners Yulong opted to draw the curtain on her racing days after she returned to training without her usual spark. The decision followed a Randwick trial on Thursday.

In the statement, Waller explained that the mare “hadn’t come back this preparation as her normal, highly energetic self,” prompting connections to prioritize her long-term well-being.

Waller paid tribute to Via Sistina’s remarkable journey, highlighting her versatility and resilience — from early wins over shorter trips to becoming a dual Cox Plate heroine.

“She is tough, determined and a beautiful mare to work with,” Waller said, describing a horse whose achievements will remain a lasting highlight for all involved.
