Barbé Cup Brings Together Proven Grade 1 Talent

The Mauritius Telecom Barbé Cup, run under weight-for-age conditions over 1600m, headlines the programme with a competitive field of 12. Every runner carries 58kg, placing the emphasis firmly on class, tactical positioning and race execution in what promises to be one of the island's premier contests.

Meridius heads the ratings on 88 and starts from barrier nine for trainer Shirish Narang, with C. Collis taking the ride. The classy performer arrives after another consistent campaign and will again be expected to play a leading role despite a middle draw.

At My Command, rated 86, has drawn ideally in barrier three for the Gujadhur stable with S. Rama aboard. Good Council shares the same rating and will break from gate six for trainer A. Nagadoo, giving both runners every opportunity to secure favourable early positions.

Selukwe, who attracted attention after finishing third in last year's Durban July, faces another difficult assignment from barrier 12. M. Nunes retains the partnership for trainer C. Hewitson, while stablemate Xavion starts from barrier seven after his Bicentenary Cup success.

Strong Representation From Leading Stables

The Gujadhur operation fields a powerful team headed by At My Command and Zil Moris, while Port Louis also lines up in the same colours. R. Gujadhur is represented by Captain Lannister and Rapidash, both of whom have drawn workable barriers in eight and five respectively.

Underworld has been allocated barrier 11 with G. van Niekerk in the saddle for trainer J. Awotar, while Bugalugs will jump from gate 10 for C. Daby. Gimmeanotherchance has secured the coveted inside draw, although no jockey had been declared at the time of publication.

Race Conditions

The Grade 1 contest carries total stake money of Rs 1,225,000, with the winner receiving Rs 716,650. Second place earns Rs 275,600, third receives Rs 153,150 and fourth is worth Rs 79,600.

With every runner meeting on equal weight terms, barrier draws, race tempo and tactical decision-making are likely to prove decisive in determining the destination of one of Mauritius' most prestigious Grade 1 prizes.
