Wide Draws Shake Up Selangor Mile Picture

The barrier draw has added an intriguing tactical dimension to Sunday's RM1 million Selangor Mile at Kuala Lumpur, with several of the leading contenders dealt difficult starting positions. While some of the fancied runners emerged with favourable gates, others now face a far more demanding assignment over the 1600m journey.

The biggest setback belonged to Fortune Tree, widely regarded as one of the leading hopes for the second running of the four-year-old feature, after drawing barrier 18.

Trainer HY Cheng, who captured the inaugural edition of the race with Lucky Magic, acknowledged the challenge but indicated that tactics would now become the key factor.

"I am disappointed naturally, I will study the field to draw up a strategy for the race," Cheng said.

Fortune Tree will once again have the services of Jose De Souza.

The highest-rated runner in the field, Pacific Energy, enjoyed a much kinder outcome with barrier seven.

Trainer David Kok believes the draw gives his charge every opportunity to produce his best performance while expressing confidence the son of Super Seth will see out the mile.

"I am happy with the draw," Kok said.

He added: "I believe he can because his sire is a miler."

Kok confirmed Pacific Energy is expected to adopt similar tactics to those used in the 4YO Sprint Championship by settling just behind the speed.

Tactics Become Critical

Barrier positions have also complicated the task for Johnny Lim's quartet. Banker's Smile drew 17, Banker's Honour 20, Banker's Happy 9 and Banker's Victory 14, leaving race tactics heavily dependent on how the field settles in the opening stages.

Lim expects the early stages to shape the race.

"Normally they race with the pace so it will depend how they fit into the race after the start," he said.

Banker's Kingdom also failed to receive any favours after drawing barrier 16.

Trainer Tiang Kim Choi acknowledged the gate was a disadvantage but intends to ride positively despite the wide starting position.

"It's a disappointing draw, otherwise he has a good chance in the race," Choi said.

"I will try to have him get up close with the pace."

Inside Gates Boost Leading Chances

Among those to benefit from the draw was Duma, who secured barrier one.

Trainer Frank Maynard noted that while the mile may not be his ideal distance, the inside gate significantly improves his prospects.

"He is not the best horse over the distance in the race but the draw helps," Maynard said.

"Duma's best distance is 1400m but he has a good chance if the track stays dry."

Jockey Bernardo Pinheiro also viewed the barrier positively given Duma's usual racing pattern.

"Duma normally comes from behind and it's a good draw to position myself," he said.

Leading trainer Simon Dunderdale was another left assessing difficult barriers, with Anjou Crown drawing 15 and Navarre 11, while Aquitaine fared much better in gate five.

Importantly, Dunderdale pointed out that many of the race's principal contenders will have to overcome wide gates.

"Seven of the top right runners drew 9 or wider so it will be a very interesting race on Sunday," he said.

He also highlighted last year's result as evidence that a wide draw is not necessarily decisive.

"Last year Antipodean drew 15 (starting from 11 after course scratchings) and he finished third."

Jockey Liam Riordan remained unconcerned about Anjou Crown's wide gate.

"I am on a good horse so it doesn't matter. So long as I am the first at the winning post," he said.

Trainer Lawson Moy was among those satisfied with the outcome after Choice Is Mine secured a barrier he believes suits the horse's racing style.

He also noted the quality of this year's field while recognising the importance of the draw.

"It suits his profile," Moy said.

"I think it's a strong 4YO field with due respect but the draw certainly serves as a bonus to his chances."

Moy also acknowledged that Irish Goodbye faces a sterner task after drawing barrier 12.

"It will be a challenge for Irish Goodbye as he is drawn 12."

With several leading contenders forced to overcome difficult barriers and others handed ideal starting positions, Sunday's Selangor Mile is shaping into a contest where race tactics and early positioning could prove just as influential as raw ability.
