Clifton Stud emerged as the leading vendor at the KZN Yearling Sale, producing another strong commercial result by selling all 17 of its yearlings for an aggregate of R3,870,000 at an average of R227,647. The figures underline the farm's continued consistency in one of South Africa's key regional yearling sales and reflected sustained buyer confidence across its draft.

The highlight of the consignment came with Lot 192, who realised R475,000 after being secured by Gary Player. The filly is by Act Of War out of the Duke Of Marmalade mare Duchess Of Windsor and descends from a distinguished female family that includes Mrs Geriatrix, Whatalady, Fort Vogue, Prince Of Kahal and Warm White Night. The result capped a successful sale for the farm and reinforced the commercial appeal of the family.

Reflecting on the outcome, Clifton Stud thanked both buyers and underbidders for their support. The acknowledgement was significant, recognising the depth of demand that contributed to the farm clearing its entire draft.

Attention will now turn to the racetrack, where the latest graduates will have the opportunity to justify the confidence shown by purchasers. Clifton Stud also extended its best wishes to all the new owners and connections as the yearlings begin the next stage of their careers.

Leading Vendors

While Clifton Stud headed the vendors' table by aggregate, the sale also produced strong performances across several established nurseries. Hemel 'n Aarde Stud sold all eight of its yearlings to record an aggregate of R3,370,000 at an average of R421,250, while Boland Stud sold seven from seven for R2,730,000, averaging R390,000.

Beaumont Stud recorded the highest average among vendors offering more than one lot. The farm sold all four of its yearlings for an aggregate of R1,800,000, producing an outstanding average of R450,000.

Blue Sky Thoroughbreds presented the largest draft and a very solid one at that among the leading vendors, selling all 16 yearlings for an aggregate of R2,725,000. Hopes and Dreams Stud returned another solid performance by selling 13 of its 14 lots. 

Other notable performances came from Hadlow Stud who had a large draft and sold very well, Dr Ashley Parker's Ascot Stud and Drakenstein Stud, each recording strong clearance rates and healthy averages.

Leading Sires - Eden is Rocing and Rolling

The sale also provided an early indication of the commercial appeal of several emerging and established stallions. Danon Platina finished as the leading sire by aggregate, with all 16 of his yearlings selling for a combined R3,695,000 at an average of R230,938.

One of the most encouraging performances came from Eden Roc standing at Clifton Stud. The young sire had all 14 of his yearlings sold, generating an aggregate of R2,800,000 and averaging R200,000. Given that Eden Roc is still establishing himself at stud, the complete clearance of his draft was a significant endorsement from buyers. The consistency of demand across his progeny suggests growing confidence in the stallion, rather than reliance on one or two standout individuals to drive his results.

Legislate produced the highest average of the leading sires. His three yearlings realised R2,725,000, returning an outstanding average of R908,333, although from a considerably smaller sample. Erik The Red continued to attract solid support with all 10 yearlings sold for an aggregate of R2,435,000 at an average of R243,500, while One World maintained his commercial momentum after selling all five of his offerings for R2,250,000.

While Danon Platina topped the sires' standings by aggregate and Legislate dominated the averages, Eden Roc's results arguably carried the greatest long-term significance. Selling every yearling offered at a healthy average is often a stronger indicator of sustained commercial confidence than isolated high-priced lots. If that level of support continues into future sales, Eden Roc appears well placed to strengthen his position among South Africa's young stallions.
