After a week of anxious forecasts, Johannesburg finally delivered the clear afternoon a major racing day deserves. Turffontein hosted a festive crowd for the 2025 Betway Summer Cup, where the feature belonged to trainer Frank Robinson, rider Tristan Godden and the four-year-old Mauritzfontein homebred Mocha Blend (Ideal World – Mocha Special).
From the moment the gates opened Godden angled across to the inside, settling Mocha Blend toward the rear and allowing her to settle into a patient rhythm. The move looked calculated — the filly tucked in, conserving energy while the leaders set the tempo up front.
As the field straightened for home and peeled off the false rail, Mocha Blend began to gather momentum. She crept forward along the inside and, with 600 metres remaining, had closed to within four lengths of the leaders. The move was quiet but decisive — the kind of inside run that can spring surprises late.
Entering the final 300 metres she found herself behind The Equator, with The Ultimate King boxing her in. Godden switched out for clear running, and Mocha Blend quickened to hit the front. Olivia’s Way mounted a determined challenge, but the filly dug deep to hold on by half a length, the clock reading 1:27.32. The race was soured by the fall of On My Honour (Serino Moodley) at the 220m, he brought down Solar Sail (Jared Penny). Both jockeys were taken to hospital for observations.
“It doesn’t feel real, it still doesn’t feel real,” Godden said, marking the first Grade 1 win of his career. “I know a lot of people didn’t like her, but I did. People asked me what I was backing in the Summer Cup and I said I’m backing myself. You’ve got to come into races like this thinking you’ve got a chance. Realistically I thought she would run in the first four, but at the back of the Quartet.”
Robinson added: “I was quietly confident she would run into a place because I rate her. I knew 2000m is what she wanted and I think the conditions were ideal for her.”
Mocha Blend wears the yellow-and-black Mauritzfontein silks of Jessica Jell; Mary Slack led the winner into the winner’s enclosure on course. The race produced a spread of results: The Ultimate King finished third, two lengths back, Busstopinhounslow was fourth and second favourite The Equator (7-2) faded to fifth, beaten 4.90 lengths. Notably, five of the first eight across the line had started at 100-1.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein and by Ideal World out of Mocha Special, the filly now races in the interests of Mauritzfontein (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Mrs J B Jell). The Summer Cup victory takes her career earnings to R3,734,462, and delivers a landmark result for a team who believed in her potential.
For Robinson, Godden and everyone connected with Mocha Blend, the win felt less like a single result and more like a beginning — proof that patience, timing and a touch of inside luck can change a horse’s story in a single, unforgettable afternoon.
