Rodeo Drive delivers meaningful Ipi Tombe Stakes triumph

Rodeo Drive’s victory in the Grade 2 Ipi Tombe Stakes was rich in symbolism, offering a powerful nod to Zimbabwe’s enduring influence on Southern African racing and breeding.

The race honours the great Zimbabwe-bred mare Ipi Tombe, who rose to international fame under the ownership of Team Valor. This year’s renewal was claimed by Rodeo Drive, bred at Sandown Stud by James Armitage, the Armitage name is synonymous with elite breeding in Zimbabwe and, later, South Africa. James' father Geoff passed away earlier this year, making the success all the more poignant for a family whose legacy continues through the Western Cape operation now run by the next generation under James.

Trained by Sean Tarry, Rodeo Drive produced a performance full of bravery and tactical authority. She moved up to take the lead approaching the 1 250m mark and immediately applied pressure, setting a strong gallop that put her rivals on the back foot. Ridden with confidence by Philasande Mxoli—currently enjoying a purple patch that recently included a Grade 3 victory in Cape Town—she was never allowed to lose momentum.

By the 600m pole, Rodeo Drive had opened a clear three-length advantage over Frozen Fantasy, with the top-rated Spumante Dolce tracking her in a handy position. Minogue, meanwhile, was still well back, waiting to unleash her finishing kick.

The complexion changed at the 400m as Minogue began to make ground from the rear and Spumante Dolce edged closer. Inside the final 200m, Minogue was charging hard, Spumante Dolce was battling to go with her, but Rodeo Drive kept responding. Showing grit and determination, she found enough to hold off the late challenge and secure a thoroughly deserved victory.

A daughter of The United States out of Crystal Cavern by Horse Chestnut, Rodeo Drive boasts a pedigree that reflects both depth and durability. Further interest surrounds her dam, who has a Jet Dark colt set to go through the National Sales in April next year and is currently in foal to Rodeo Drive’s full sibling.

It was a win that resonated beyond the result itself—linking past and present, Zimbabwe and South Africa, and celebrating a breeding legacy that continues to leave its mark at the highest level.
